About this event
Ashtanga yoga is a physically demanding style of yoga that involves a sequence of advanced poses, or asanas, performed in a specific order. The poses are repeated in a disciplined manner, with an emphasis on the flow and breath between movements. The practice is often taught in the Mysore style, where the teacher guides and adjusts each student individually, and students perform at their own pace. Ashtanga yoga is made up of six series of poses that increase in difficulty, including a primary series, a secondary series, and four advanced levels. Each practice begins and ends with five cycles of sun salutations, and the poses include standing and seated postures, forward folds, twists, and backbends. Students are encouraged to focus on their breath and move with intention and awareness, using slow, deep breathing with the inhale and exhale done through the nose and producing sound. The word Ashtanga comes from two Sanskrit words, Ashta and Anga, which mean "eight" and "limb" or "body part". Ashtanga yoga is the union of the eight limbs of yoga, which are outlined in the Yoga Sutras compiled by the sage Patanjali around 200 BCE:
